Born in Normangee, Texas, on May 20, 1922, he was the son of Jack Batson and Elma (Orr) Batson. James, or better known as one of the fathers of Southeast Texas, story started during his service in the Navy during World War II, where he was formed into a leader, with a love to help anyone who crossed his path. He had a unique passion for woodworking which eventually led him into a newfound passion of passing his knowledge to his numerous students at Port Arthur School District. James started the Easter Cross Project during his time with St. Paul United Methodist Church, which is known largely for the white crosses displayed in homes across Southeast Texas. One of his fondest memories was being a part of founding the Port Arthur Teacher’s Credit Union, helping so many teachers in the area. James will be dearly missed by all those whose lives he touched.
