Andrew J. Guillory

April 29, 1931 — December 27, 2010

Andrew J. Guillory, 79, passed away in his home Monday, December 27, 2010 at 10:45 A.M., after a long courageous battle with cancer. His wife, Joan Guillory, was by his side as he took that final breath.

Andrew was a native Texan. He was born April 29, 1931 in Orange, Texas. He completed his formal education in the small town of Deweyville, Texas, and graduated with a BS in Physics in 1954 from East Texas State University. He enlisted into the Air Force upon graduation, trained as an Air Electronics Officer, and served until June of 1967. Andrew then began his career with NASA working at Kennedy Space Center on the Technical Support Operation Management team. This team was responsible for conducting all tests ensuring the integrity of the launch readiness for the Apollo Soyuz mission and for each Apollo mission.

NASA intended to create a launching site in the West at Vandenberg Air Force Base and Andrew was invited to be a member of the 6595th Shuttle Test Group. He accepted and moved to Lompoc, California in March 1983. After the Challenger explosion, NASA decided to close down the West launch site. Andrew retired from NASA in May 1987.

He and wife, Joan, retired to Chico, California in 1995 and enjoyed their freedom by playing golf or just traveling making many trips home to Texas. Known by his family and friends as Andy, he loved to travel, so he and Joan visited many of our state and national parks. Having served our country in the Air Force, Andy and Joan also visited Washington D. C. and the Viet nam Memorial. Even though Andy spent much of his adult life living in Florida and California, he remained a true Texan at heart. No matter where he traveled, here or abroad he wore his cowboy hat.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Guillory and his sisters, Grace Hershey of Orange, Texas; Jessie Gormas of Cincinnati, Ohio; Veola Forse and Betty Sheppard both of Buna, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents Thad and Lillian Guillory of Deweyville, Texas and his brother Leroy Guillory of Deweyville, Texas precede him in death.

Andy wished to be buried in Texas. There will be a graveside service at the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Orange, Texas Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 10:00 A. M. and a memorial service will be held at St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church 2341 Floral Avenue, Chico, California, January 13, 2011 at 10:00 A.M.

Andy believed in helping those in the community, so in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the local Salvation Army. To view obituary and to send condolences to the family go online to nbcfh.com.
