1929 ∼ 2016

Ann Louise Bryant, 86, long time music and piano teacher of Bridge City, Texas, passed away on January 13, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Monday, January 18, 2016 at Winfree Baptist Church in Bridge City, Texas. Officiating will be Reverend Keith Royal of Winfree Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Orange.

Visitation will be from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Sunday, at Claybar Funeral Home in Bridge City, Texas.

Mrs. Bryant lived a life full of music and people.

Born in Nederland, Texas, on May 14, 1929, she was the daughter of William Earl and Ethel Jones Kitchen of Port Neches, Texas. A Port Neches High School graduate, she was a National Honor Society member from early in her education. She attended St. Louis School of Music right after high school. She then earned both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from Lamar University and Sam Houston State College. She was a lifelong member of National Piano Playing Auditions and received numerous awards throughout her career.

Ann, or Louise as many knew her, began teaching in 1948 in Orange at Colburn Elementary. She taught generations of students in Orange and Bridge City in both the public school system and in private lessons in her lovely studio at her home. She spent years at Hatton Elementary where her music productions inspired many students. She seemed to always have a smile and a kind word.

Her students will remember her patience and kindness while teaching them not to B flat or B sharp but just to B natural. She personally could play any and everything from a Sonatina to Floyd Cramer’s Last Date, Jerry Lee Lewis and inspirational music from Amazing Grace to Heavenly Sunshine. She played the organ and piano for Winfree Baptist church every Sunday morning since 1957.

Her family and friends were always welcomed with a smile and offering of a meal plus an added push to “take some home”. The door was always open and she would gently suggest “come spend the night”.

Ann learned strong work ethics from an early age by working on the family dairy farm in Port Neches. She also had a deep love of animals especially her ever loyal dogs. She was a shining example of staying healthy, active and happy no matter what hurricanes or uncomfortable situations arose. She had strong opinions on religion and politics but tolerated those of differing stances.

She will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her. Friends, family, and students. She will remain with us on the wings of the music she loved and taught so well.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her brother, Dr. James William Kitchen, her husband of 64 years, Cecil Paul Bryant, Sr. and her granddaughter, Melissa Ann Mesch.

She is survived by her son Cecil Paul Bryant. Jr and wife, Van (Trahan) Bryant of Bridge City, Texas; her daughter, Lisa Ann (Bryant) Keller and husband Dr. Michael Keller all of Port Neches, Texas; grandsons, Raun Paul Bryant and wife Kristal (Soileau) Bryant, Josh Landry and wife Richelle (Myers) Landry, all of Bridge City, Texas, and Marc R. Mesch and wife Laynie (Jackson) Mesch of San Angelo, Texas; great-grandchildren, Aden Paul Bryant, Mason Paul Bryant, Libby Lou Bryant, Clarissa Nicole Landry all of Bridge City, Texas, and Parker Russell and Noah Thomas Mesch of San Angelo, Texas.

She is also survived by her nieces, Pam Fraser of Austin, Texas, Pat Kitchen of Elgin, Texas, Paula Curry of Alpine, Texas; and nephew, James William Kitchen, Jr., of Livingston, Montana. There are numerous great nephews and nieces.

Serving as pallbearers will be Raun Bryant, Josh Landry, Billy Bryant, Kim Bryant, Matt Bryant and Marc Mesch.

Honorary pallbearers will be Aden Paul Bryant, Mason Paul Bryant, Andrew Mambretti, Dr. Michael Keller, Dylan Kitchen Nikoletopoulos and George Ela.

My Mom (who was the first school nurse in B.C.) and family moved to Bridge City in 1958. I was in the 2nd grade. I always loved music and meeting Ann for the first time really was an experience. She loved all of us kids and put everything she had into all the musical programs. I along with many other kids enjoyed being part of her productions. I never had so much fun! She will be missed. Prayers to her family.

I do not have many detailed memories of my other classes at Hatton Elementary, but my memories of music class are vivid! I remember our music shows and how thrilled we always were to take part in them! I remember singing solos and keeping my costumes forever! She would ask me at times to play the piano in class and would make me feel so proud! She taught us how to sing and keep rhythm, about composers, and even made theory fun! My life was filled with music and her class was a huge part of my passion. My sincere sympathy to Lisa and Paul. There is nothing in life that compares to losing your mother! May you be comforted and blessed by the legacy she leaves behind and please know that she leaves us all with a sweet song in our hearts! God bless you.

James Davis January 15, 2016
This is James Davis. Like many of your students. I have more than fond thoughts of those days at Elementary School. I have used what you had taught me well. I am a music teacher too now. Music has given me so much Joy. And taken me places I may never have seen If not for your Love of music and children like me. What I learned about the noble art of Music from you. One song means something more than its parts. You would play records for us. Blowin in the Wind. Bob Dylan and Woody's This Land is Your Land. Songs that said something to us. As long as I live I'll have you to thank for that. I'd like to play you a song. J.Davis

A tribute to Ann Bryant by Cheryl Crim-Morgan Whether we were a part of one of Ann's "school productions" or a private student of hers, thousands of students in B.C. schools learned to appreciate music through Ann's creations and patience, I remember learning Supercalifracilisticexpialidocious along with the ENTIRE Hatton Elementary School in the auditorium/lunchroom of Hatton Elem., Ann directing/teaching each syllable until we could all sing it together with the music. How magical is that! Thank You Ann for all you did for thousands of students who were fortunate enough to be touched by your talent! Cheryl Crim-Morgan

I love Ann! She taught me piano and I was in a few of her fabulous productions in school. She let my mom pay for lessons by sewing for her and her children. I will always remember what a sweet, patient lady she was. She was so talented. She would sit there and write out a popular song so I could play it on my level. I still own and cherish many pencil written songs by her. There will never be another music teacher as GRAND as her. Condolences to all that love her.

The occasion was Ann Bryant's 50th year of teaching and the production that year had a western theme that set well with the students and the community. As the finale', 50 students, one at a time, brought her a single yellow rose. I know Ann was touched for she mentioned that scene to me several times and she accurately quoted what I had said to her in concluding that presentation. Sorry, those words a just between Ann and me. Farewell Ann Louise Bryant. Larry Myers

Mrs. Bryant was very magical to me when I was only seven years old. Her joy of teaching spilled over to every child who ever attended her classes at Hatton Elementary. Just walking into her class and being handed a triangle ignited my joy for music for the rest of my life! If she was so happy about it, how could I not be! I lived Mrs. Bryant. She was such a wonderful blessing to so many of us! Lisa, thank you for sharing this lovely woman with us!

Ann Bryant was a Bridge City icon. I have such fond memories from my childhood that are attributed to Mrs. Bryant-- from music class at Hatton, the musicals she directed-- I still sing some of the songs. Then there are the 9 years of piano lessons with lots of John Schaum music and popular music I liked. I was not that good at memorizing my recital music but, Mrs. Bryant never made me feel like an underachiever-- she just let me use the printed music. Thank you Mrs Bryant for all those memories!

I am so sad to hear this news, but wish for the family to know how special she was. As a former student of hers at Hatton Elementary, she was exceptional. I can remember her class better than any academic class as a child. She gave us challenges, and shared with us her love for music. She smiled bright, and shared so many talents with all of us. She will be missed, although she is rejoicing in Heaven with her Father.

Ann Bryant was my music teacher in school and also taught both of my children. All three of us share the love of music gifted to us by Ann Bryant. She was a beautiful lady who always made me feel special when we ran into each other. She will be sorely missed by all that had the privilege of knowing her. May the full peace of God be upon her family at this time. Darrell Segura

Ann had a wonderful way of teaching the love of music to children! I was privileged to teach with Ann at Hatton Elementary where she organized expert musical plays. Also, she taught piano to many Bridge City students including my daughter, Lori. Ann will be remembered for her musical gift and also her gift of friendship. Love and prayers are sent to her family during this difficult time, Sally Robinson Montague

Although as an adult I did not know this wonderful lady, I do have a childhood memory that I didn't come to appreciate until I became an adult and was raising my own family. Mrs. Bryant was my music teacher in the first grade at Hatton Elementary. That year my Daddy had a horrible accident at our home which nearly took his life. Because of this accident he could not work for several months. With four young children to support, this was a very hard time for my parents. Mrs. Bryant headed a group who collected food for my family because she had heard there was a need. I will never forget how shocked and excited I was that my teacher came to my house. I was too young to realize or appreciate what a great gift she had brought my family. Over the years I have thought about that day many times and what a giving and caring lady she must be to care about a family she had never met. My thoughts and prayers go out to Mrs. Bryant's family and I want them to know what angel she was to a family in need in the late 1950's.

Mrs. Bryant was such a wonderful soul. So many great memories in her class. From learning to square dance, learning holiday music, watching the monster mash, to learning the 50 states in alphabetical order through song. Almost 20 years later and a smile still comes to my face when I thing of this sweet lady. I can only image the music playing where she is now. My prayers go out to her love ones.

Mrs. Bryant was our mentor and friend and my daughter Gabby's piano teacher. She was a lovely lady who reminded me much of my own mother. She was always well dressed, so proper and shared the love of teaching and playing the piano along with being a retired educator like my mom. We enjoyed our weekly piano lesson with her and often played with Lady while we waited for the lesson to end. She was so patient and kind and our family is saddened by her loss. We are honored that she was a part of all our lives. May God give Paul and Lisa and their families peace, comfort and understanding during this difficult time. Brock, Rachel, Taylor, Gabby, and Emory LeBlanc

I was very fortunate to have Mrs. Bryant as a piano teacher for several years. She was incredibly patient with me, always quick to point out the good things, & encouraging when competition time came around. I have been meaning to get back into piano lately & I am now resolved to do so, in honor of the woman who spent so many hours diligently instilling the gift of music in my soul. You will be sorely missed, Mrs. Bryant! May angels sing you to your rest.

I am so sorry to hear this. Just looking at her beautiful picture makes my heart sing, though. Mrs. Bryant was such an inspiration! She introduced me to the love of music. I worked hard to instill that in my children...always remembering her special way. And, WOW, what talent she was blessed with. She could have worked and/or performed anywhere in the world with her gift....but, instead, she spread the love all over Bridge City. From musicals at Hatton Elem...piano recitals...weekly practices... we shared so many laughs....I still have every piece of music from her with her notes handwritten for me. Sigh.... I am sending prayers to her family. Lisa is right, "The music in heaven just became more beautiful!" Most fondly, Kristi Jordan Panahi...husband, Mason....and our kids who heard about her their whole lives, Hannah and Kevin
