Arthur William Art Olschefski

Arthur William, "Art" Olschefski, 93, of Orange passed away Friday, September 24, at the Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Home in Orange.
He was a native of Detroit, Michigan, born on August 31, 1917, the son of Julius Olschefski and Mary Duddick Olschefski. Art obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering from Michigan Technological University, and a graduate degree in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He began employment with DuPont in 1939 as a Technologist at the Experimental Station in Wilmington, Delaware. Art worked on the development of synthetic materials, notably nylon, during the World War II years. His contributions were so vital to the war effort that he was granted a draft deferment in order to stay on the project.
After the war years he was assigned to the Belle Works at Charleston, West Virginia and in 1947 he was transferred to the DuPont Sabine River Works in Orange, Texas. In 1951 he was sent to the DuPont C I L Plant near Maitland, Canada as a part of the start up team for that facility. In 1953 he returned to Orange.
While employed with DuPont his positions included Supervisor, Assistant Division Superintendent, Division Engineer, and Senior Engineer. His main areas of expertise were in the Adipic Acid and Diaimine Divisions. Art retired in 1983 with 44 years of DuPont service.
He was a charter member of the Sunset Grove Country Club and an avid golfer as long as his health permitted. Art was also a charter member of the Orange Kiwanis Club and was an organizer of the Kiwanis Kids Day Program. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Orange.
Art is survived by his wife, Mary Hobba Olschefski, whom he married March 17, 1940. They had recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Other survivors include his daughter and son in law, Jane and Mike Louviere of Sulphur, Louisiana; grandson, Alan Bruce Cameron of Florence, Texas; granddaughter, Mary Jane Cameron Follett of Derby, England; and several nieces and one nephew.
Art is also survived by his two "boys" Mikey and Heller, the house cats.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the Claybar Funeral Home Chapel, 504 N. Fifth Street, Orange, Texas.
