Billie Marie Jones Burnham

A memorial service for Billie Marie Jones Burnham, 82, of Port Arthur will be held Friday, November 21, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Temple in Port Arthur. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of St. John's United Methodist Church in Port Arthur with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Interment will be Friday at 10:00 a.m. in the Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches.
Billie was born on November 8, 1926, in Douglas County, Kansas, to Leslie and Margaret Jones. While attending Wichita University, she met a young Army Air Corp cadet from Texas. Billie married Richard Lee Burnham on November 18, 1944. At the end of World War II, the young couple returned to the Port Acres community in Texas where they raised their three children, Ray Lynn, Kay and Richard, and two of their grandchildren, Raymond and Margaret.
As a young mother, Billie joined St. John's Methodist Church and spent her life serving Christ through that congregation. Over the decades she served as musician, leader, treasurer and teacher. She raised her family in the church, gained deep friendships within the church, and had her spirit nurtured through the church.
She enjoyed a good book, a good joke, a well-crafted story, a good meal, a good conversation, and a game of Scrabble with her good friend, Martha McCarter. Her legacy, however, is her faith, her faithfulness and her love that lives through her family, her church and her friends.
On the sixty-fourth anniversary of her marriage to Rick, she rejoined him among the communion of saints. She died on November 18 hearing her grandson Raymond recite the Lord's Prayer and sing Kum Ba Yah.
Billie was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Lee Burnham; son, Ray Lynn Burnham and sister, Dorothy "Dot" Jones Headley. She is survived by her son, Reverend Richard A. Burnham of Beaumont and wife Melissa; daughter, Kay Burnham Lené of Port Arthur and husband Richard; sister, Laura Lee Jones Harrold and husband Lee; and also by her 10 grandchildren: Patrick A. Lené; Ray C. Burnham and wife Krista; Janet Lynn Lené Wise and husband Darren; Margaret "Payshunz" Burnham and companion Angel Manzanares; Amy Guzman and husband Joe; Reverend Jason Burnham and wife Lauren; Sara Burnham; Hunter Wingfield; Rebecca Burnham; Austin Wingfield; 6 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
