Blanche Barnes Gongre

Blanche Barnes Gongre, 97, of Port Arthur, died Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 23, 2009, from 6-8 p.m. at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. The rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Thursday and will be led by Deacon Larry David.

Born in Ardmore, Oklahoma on April 6, 1912, she was the daughter of William and Gracie Hector Barnes.

She came to Orange during World War II. After her marriage to Louis Gongre, she converted to the Catholic faith, which became an important part of her life. She was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Orange and for several years worked at the Orange Public Library.

Blanche was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Gongre; daughter, Billie Baggett; son-in-law, Levi Baggett; and an infant son, George Williams.

She is survived by her son, Charles Gongre and his wife, Lisa, of Nederland; granddaughters, Linda Graffagnino of Prosper, Brenda Hicks of Vidor, Deborah LeBlanc and her husband, Joel, of Stafford; grandson, George Baggett and his wife, Danette, of Spurger.

Also surviving are her great grandchildren, Greg LeBlanc, Tammy Reese, Amanda Flanigan, Joel LeBlanc, III, Nicole Russell; and great great grandchildren, Tyler Reese, Lauren LeBlanc, Tanner Reese, Morgan Jowers, Logan LeBlanc, Ethan LeBlanc, Luke LeBlanc and Colton Russell.

Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Southeast Texas or to St. Joseph's Indian School in Chamberlain, South Dakota.
