Clifford Mathews, 92, died Thursday, October 2, 2008 at Oak Grove Nursing Home in Groves .
Funeral service will be 2:00 pm, Sunday, October 5, 2008 at the temporary location for Claybar Funeral Home in Orange located at 1408 W. Park Ave. Reverend Dale Vance will officiate. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Orange .
Visitation will be Sunday from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm at the funeral home.
Clifford was born January 4, 1916 in Beaumont to Oren and Aileen Mathews. Clifford attended San Marcos Baptist Church and graduated from Beaumont High. He worked at his father's business, Texas Storage Co. in Beaumont . Clifford also owned an Humble station on 2nd and Green with Eddie Ruppert. He was employed as safety inspector at American Bridge , Levingston, and U. S. Steel before joining the City of Orange as building inspector on April 1, 1958. He retired from there after 25 years of service. Clifford helped found the Building Officials Association of Texas BOAT and was the only president of the organization to serve three terms. He was a 32nd degree Mason and former member of the Orange Volunteer Fire Department. Clifford was also the past president of the Golden Triangle Inspection Association.
Clifford had a green thumb and enjoyed working in his yard and tending to his flowers.
Clifford is preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 56 years, Eleanor Futch Mathews.
He is survived by his daughter, Paula Mathews of Groves ; cousin, Mrs. Glady Squire of Cleveland ; and numerous relatives in the Cleveland , Texas area.
