Doris Allyne Martin

September 23, 1931 — January 4, 2015

Funeral services for Doris Allyne Martin will be held Thursday, January 8, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the Claybar Kelley-Watkins Chapel. Interment will follow in Haven of Rest Cemetery. A gathering of her family and friends will be Wednesday from 4-6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Doris, 83, was born September 23, 1931 in Ganado, Texas to Walter Henry Schulte and Esther Engelnocks Schulte. Doris was a devoted homemaker with an untiring love of serving Christ.

Doris was married to Rudon Hayes Martin for over 61 years until his death on August 13, 2011. She began life on a farm in rural Ganado, Texas and after her family moved to Austin in her youth, she went to and graduated from Austin High School. She met a young soldier returning from service in World War II, fell in love, and they began a long marriage that produced four children.

Don worked as a plumber and pipefitter, and his work often required him to be gone for weeks, and even months, while Doris managed the children and their home. No matter the toil of daily life, she always had her children in church and always stressed the importance of Christ in their lives.

She was a longtime member of her beloved Amelia Baptist Church, where (along with other churches), she taught bible study for over 50 years. She loved her friends from Triple L and the Amelia Baptist family, and loved playing dominoes and traveling.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Charles Husband of Beaumont, Shelley and David Morgan of Buda, Texas, Marilyn and Paul Tompkins, Sr. of Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Bethanne Martin of Houston; grandchildren, Paul Tompkins Jr., Wes Morgan, Carl Husband, Michelle Brown, Elizabeth Allyne Martin, Brian Scott Martin, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Jadyn Tompkins, Taylor Tompkins, Layla Brown; and sisters, Peggy Patterson and Shirley Hulett.
