Doris Jane Hughes Steele, 88, of Orange, Texas, passed away on May 19, 2023, in Orange.
Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 25, 2023, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. Officiating will be Pastor Harland Strother of Cowboy Church in Orange. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Orange.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange.
Born in Houston, Texas, on February 23, 1935, she was the daughter of Grady and Millie (Gentry) Hughes. After graduating from Orangefield High School in 1953, Doris married the love of her life, Ernest Gene Steele on September 2, 1955. She dedicated her life to her family and home and worked as a domestic engineer. Doris was also employed as a florist at Bland’s Florist. She was a hardworking woman who volunteered in several positions including, Court Appointed Special Advocate, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, Lion’s Club, American Red Cross, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, different hospitals, and Amateur Radio operator. Doris’ loved ones will always treasure their memories of her and will miss her dearly.
She is preceded in death by her dad, Grady Mitchell Hughes; mom, Millie Gentry; husband, Gene Steele; brother, Wayne and Evelyn Hughes; sister, Geneva Hooker; daughter, Mary Kay Lanting; son-in-law, Fred Lanting; and great-grandson, Remington Gene Steele.
She is survived by her children, Vicki Steele King of Orangefield, Texas, and Mark Steele, Sr. and wife, Candice Conroy Steele of Orangefield; grandchildren, Chris King and wife, Risa, Jane Anne Ayarza and husband, Chuck, J.B. Lanting and wife, Victoria, Dillin Lanting and wife, Danielle, Marke Steele, Jr. and wife, Candice, Jessica Tant and husband, Josh, and Blake Nicole Steele; over 20 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Curtis Hughes and wife, Lois.
Serving as pallbearers will be J.B. Lanting, Mark Steele, Jr., Dillin Lanting, Blaze King, Jace Nunnelly, and Josh Tant. Honorary pallbearers are Chris King, Gage King, Chuck Ayarza.
