Dr. Myrtle L. Bell

September 2, 1927 — April 6, 2009

Myrtle Lee Bell, 81, passed away on Monday, April 6 at Christus Saint Elizabeth Hospital after a short illness. She was born on September 2, 1927 and was the second daughter of Walter D. Bell and Anna L. McLester Bell of Rockport, Texas. Her parents preceded her in death as did her brother, Walter D. Bell and her sisters, Mary Frances Bell Weid and Alice Bell.
After graduation from Rockport High School she attended and received her Bachelor of Science and her Master of Science degrees at Texas A&M University, Kingsville. She then attended the University of Texas at Austin and received her doctorate of education. She began her professional career as Dean of Girls at Austin High School in the Austin Independent School District. Myrtle Bell's interest in the healthy development of youth was evidenced by her positions as professor of Education at Texas Woman's University and professor and Director of Early Childhood Learning Center at Odessa College. In 1963, Dr. Bell became the Department Head and Dean of the college for Health and Behavioral Science at Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas until retirement.
She is survived by her sisters, Mrs. Anna Mae Williams, Riverview, FL; and Mrs. Patsy Hudman, San Angelo, TX; a brother, Glen McMillan, Canyon Lake, TX; nieces Ms. Frances Williams, Mrs. Mary Zaleski and Mrs. Tami Newsome of Riverview, FL and Mrs. Linda Haddad, Abilene, TX; nephews Randy Ransleben, Houston, TX and Jeffery Bell, San Antonio, TX; great nieces Rachel Ransleben, Houston, TX, Dr. Lauren McVoy, Sea Cliff, NY, Mrs. Ashley Smith and Ms. Shawna Newsome, Riverview, FL; her very special friends Dr. Belle Mead Holm and Marcia Poole, Beaumont, TX, Rick Marriott, Horseshoe Bay, Austin, TX, Ken and Sharon Petersen, Spicewood, TX, Dot Woodfin, Friendswood, TX and Dr. Jean Setzer, San Antonio, TX.
A heartfelt thanks and tremendous gratitude is extended to Dr. Mark Toups, Dr. Joseph Holland, Marcia Poole and all the members of the medical community and Christus Saint Elizabeth Hospital for the special care and compassion during her illness.
