Edwin Enoch Hyatt

Edwin Enoch Hyatt, Sr., born on August 7, 1921, to Thomas and Nettie Hyatt in Singer, Louisiana, passed away on June 30, 2023, at Sabine Place in Orange, Texas, at the age of 101.

Edwin graduated class valedictorian from DeQuincy High School in 1939. Having first attended McNeese Junior College in Lake Charles, Louisiana, he graduated from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1943. Shortly after his graduation, he married the love of his life, Marie Charlton of Eunice, with whom he shared 69 happy years before her death in 2013.

Edwin served in Germany in 1944-1946 with the 43rd Battalion of the 12 Armored Division during WWII and taught communications at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, during the Korean War. Following his return from the service in 1946, he joined the Borden Company, where he retired in 1979, having served as Comptroller of the Dairy Division in Houston, Texas, and plant manager in Biloxi, Mississippi. Between 1953 and 1956, Edwin worked with his father and uncles in the family business, Hyatt Brothers Dry Goods in DeQuincy.

Hunting and fishing were natural pastimes for a boy growing up in small-town Louisiana, as he grew older Edwin found a love for golf and continued pursuing the outdoor life well into his 90’s. One of his favorite pastimes in his declining years was sitting in a rocking chair in his sunroom, watching birds and squirrels and the birdbath and feeder. Through all the times, good and bad, that Ed and Marie lived through, their faith was a strength and comfort. Edwin served as deacon in several Baptist churches and attended First Baptist Church Orange for as long as his strength lasted.

Edwin is preceded in death by his wife, Marie Charlton Hyatt; father, Thomas Hyatt; mother, Nettie Davis Hyatt; and his brother, Esthus.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Susan Hyatt Jones and her husband Ron and Lisa Hyatt Miller and her husband Mark; son, Edwin, Jr. and his wife Barbara Levin; his eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren. Also, especially close to him were his cousin Ray Hyatt of DeQuincy, Louisiana; his niece Mary Elizabeth Hyatt Blalock; and his niece Martha Charlton Barchfeld, who visited him often.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Sabine Place in Orange for their wonderful, loving care, along with his devoted, loving caregivers and friends.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., July 8, 2023, at First Baptist Church Orange; 7637 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive Orange, Texas 77632 with funeral services to be held immediately following the visitation at 11:00 a.m..

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of First Baptist Church of Orange, Texas.

Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m., July 8, 2023, at McFatter Cemetery; Rigmaiden Cemetery Road in DeQuincy, Louisiana 70633.
