Elwood "Pop" Culbert

January 31, 1920 — May 5, 2013

J. Elwood Culbert, 93, was born January 31, 1920 in Johnson City, TN to Clyde D. and Beatrice A. Culbert. He died Sunday, May 5, 2013 peacefully as he rested in Port Arthur, TX. Elwood proudly served his country commencing in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and concluding with his retirement from the United States Air Force twenty-five years later. After his service, Pop entered the oil and gas industry where he served as a supervisor for McDermott International, Inc., formerly known as J. Ray McDermott, Inc. Twelve years later, he would retire from the industry leading company. Upon retirement, Pop stayed busy working for C & C Trucking for five years and finally a thirty year stint with Cherokee Motors and Equipment.
Mr. Culbert was preceded in death by his wife of forty-two years, Lillian Culbert; aforementioned parents; sons, Terrence Culyer and Elwood Culbert Jr.; sisters, Helen Bostick, Francis Cooper and Barbara Galle; brothers, Ray Culbert and Clyde Culbert Jr.; and grandsons, Charles Stripling and Benjamin Brezendine.
Mr. Culbert is survived by his sons Mike Glenda Culyer of Vidor, Richard M. Culbert of Vidor and Michael Culbert of Virginia; daughters, Sandra Frank Santos of Pensacola, Florida and Elaine Michael Hatch of Kingsville, Ohio; sisters, Margaret Peterson of San Jose, California, Tina Greenwood of Sugar Creek, Oklahoma and Imogene White of Antlers, Oklahoma. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; Tammy Mike Curry, Cindy Merriman, Anna Juston Walker, Stacey Brian McNeely, Richard C. Brittani Culbert, April Brad Farmer, Tracey Allen Payne, Deane Stripling and Theresa Hatch. Others left behind include twenty-one great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and countless friends.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home. Military honors will be rendered by the Southeast Texas Veterans Service Group.
