George Oliver Talbert

George Oliver Talbert went home to be with the Lord on February 15, 2011.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 ? 7:00 pm, Friday, February 18, 2011 at Claybar Kelly-Watkins Funeral Home in Beaumont. Funeral services will be held at Westgate Memorial Baptist Church, 6220 Westgate Drive, Beaumont at 12:00 pm on Saturday, February 19, 2011 with Rev. Raymond McHenry officiating. Graveside services will follow at Dry Creek Cemetery in Dry Creek, Louisiana, with Rev. Henry Hebert officiating. Pallbearers serving will be Gordon Hart, Ed Vogel, William Cable, Alvin Newton, Jim Thomas, and Kevin Carl.
George was born November 26, 1943, in Port Arthur, to George Truett Talbert and Margaret Eugenia Oliver Talbert. He was influenced by his father to be an outdoorsman, and his mother taught him to love the Lord. George gave his life to God as a young boy. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, he entered Lamar University and completed his studies with a Masters Degree in Engineering. While attending Lamar, George met Sandra Green at the Baptist Student Union. They were married on December 18, 1965. They had two children, George Clinton and Andrea Kathryn. George was a wonderful person, husband, father, friend, and outdoorsman. He always talked about his family and how proud he was of them. George enjoyed taking his family on vacations, even later taking his grandchildren. He also spent his time hunting with his son and grandson. George excelled at shooting sporting clays and enjoyed attending and sponsoring shoots across the nation. He became licensed as an instructor and even taught his grandchildren how to shoot. George achieved the rank of Master Shooter. George and Sandy were members of Westgate Memorial Baptist Church and enjoyed being part of the Sojourners class.
George went to work for Mobil in 1966. He had a very successful career with Mobil moving his family to work in New York City and Washington DC. He held various engineering and supervisory positions with Mobil. George was promoted to Manager of Environmental, Health, Safety and Training and then Manager of Legislative and Regulatory Affairs for Texas. Although he retired from Mobil in 1996, he decided to continue working and went to work for Lamar University. George became Director of the Texas Air Research Center in 2002. He has worked with industry, state, and federal agencies from across the US obtaining millions of research dollars for Lamar and other state universities. During his career, he was a member of many professional and civic committees and receiving several awards for his diligent work on environmental service.
George is survived by his wife, Sandra, son, George Clinton, and daughter, Andrea Kathryn Dilts and her husband, Charles Dilts. He has three grandchildren, Chamis, Teagan, and Cate Dilts. George is also survived by his two brothers, Thomas Talbert and his wife Annette, and Dr. Ronald E. Talbert and his wife Raenella and his two children. He is also survived by his step-mother Willa Mae Talbert and his aunt Mary Sue Gorin and many nieces and nephews.
