Gustavo ?Gus? Garza, 89, a founding resident of Bridge City since 1946, died Friday, August 24, 2007 at Cypress Glen in Port Arthur.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 27, 2007 at St. Henry Catholic Church. Officiating will be Reverend Jim McClintock.
Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m., Sunday at Claybar Funeral Home in Bridge City. A Rosary and Vigil service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. Garza was born on December 11, 1917 in Port Lavaca, TX. He retired from Texaco as head photographer after 37 years. Mr. Garza spent his life serving his church, the youth and his community. He served three staggered terms as board president for BCISD and had held every school board office. He served on the board for 23 years during which time he was instrumental in the development of multiple major projects.
He was elected Bridge City?s first Outstanding Citizen. He also had held every office in Bridge City?s Knights of Columbus since he joined in 1947 and was the last surviving charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 3406. He also served on various boards and committees of area civic organizations, including the incorporation of Bridge City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Angelina Garza; daughters, Glenda and Mary Ann Garza; parents, Francisco and Jovita Rendon Garza; sister, Josephine Ramirez; and brother, E.P. Sosa.
He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria Soto and Fred of Fredericksburg and Gabriel Cantu and Juan of Orange; son and daughter-in-law, Mike Garza and Bertha of Bridge City; grandchildren, Daniel and Steven Soto; Angela, Jessica, Erica, and Gus Michael Garza, Olivia Dillow, and Michael and Aaron Cantu; great grandchildren, Luke Ryan and Megan
Isabella Soto, Julian and Grace Dillow, and Cole and Samantha Cantu.
He is also survived by his sisters, Juanita Mayo and Elisa Gonzalez; brother, Frank Alvarez; sister, Dora Jimenez; brothers, Damaso Sosa, Jr. and Alfonso Sosa.
Serving as pallbearers are Daniel R. Soto, Steven Soto, Gus Michael Garza, Glenn Pearson, William James, and Joe Vann.
Honorary pallbearers are Luke Soto and Julian Dillow.
