Hazel S. Trahan, 89, of West Orange, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2007.
Visitation will be
10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 21, 2007, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange followed by a graveside service at 12:00 noon at St. Mary?s Cemetery. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Trahan was born December 22, 1917, in Crowley, Louisiana, to Claude and Grace Stout Stelly. She moved to West Orange in 1942.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph Trahan; brothers, Lloyd and Octave Stelly; sisters, Gerdie Ledoux, Bella Broussard, Pearl Boudreaux; great great grandson, Connor Bruner and her long time companion, Luther Taylor.
She leaves behind three daughters, Sadie Laird, Mary Gagnon, Jane Richard; sisters, Mae Rose Gaspard of Kaplan, Louisiana and Violet Meaux of Oberlin, Louisiana.
Also surviving are her grandchildren, Clifford Carruthers, Tony Plant, Tammy Shelton, David and Mary Lenz, Sandra and Kenneth Taylor, Steven and Crystal Lenz, Reece and Rebecca Kitchen; 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandson.
She also leaves behind her second family, Louise Ross, Jimmy Taylor, Nadine Cook, Lucian Taylor and her longtime best friend, Irene Viator.
Hazel?s daughters would like to thank Janette Carney, LaJuan Granger and Theresa Krout for their visits to the nursing home, Dr. Wesley Palmer, who was so caring with her, to Renaissance Hospital of Groves for their wonderful care, her many caregivers and to everyone for their love, visits and prayers.
Hazel worked for 18 years at Del Dixie Canning Plant in West Orange and for five years at West Orange School Cafeteria. She also baby sat the Bourgeois boys and loved all three as her own.
She was known to her friends as Hazel and to her family as Big Maw. She loved to dance, cook Cajun food, and play bingo. Her grandchildren have special memories of her dressing as a witch on Halloween and giving out candy.
Hazel loved shopping at garage sales and Wal-Mart. She, her good friend Irene Viator and her two sisters made many wonderful memories during these shopping trips.
