Helen Laverne Dunlap, 86, of Bridge City, died, Thursday, May 31, 2007, at her residence.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 4, 2007, at St. Henry Catholic Church in Bridge City, Reverend Tino Barrera will be officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Orange.
Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Claybar Funeral Home Chapel in Bridge City.
Helen was born July 31, 1920, in Chicago, IL, to Eugene and Helen Keating Alford. In 1954, Helen distinguished herself by becoming Head Nurse at St. Mary?s Hospital. In 1957, she became Director of Nurses at Park Place Hospital in Port Arthur, TX.
During the years 1972-1980 Helen was Director of Instruction of Nurses Licensed Vocational Nurses at Stillwell Technical Center. Then, during the years 1980-1982, Helen was an instructor at Lamar University, teaching classes in pediatrics, psychology and microbiology for nursing students. She taught at campuses, Port Arthur, Orange and Beaumont.
In 1982 Helen retired from formal teaching; but, she kept busy teaching Bible study classes at one of the maximum security prisons in the Golden Triangle penal complex. Her home is located just across the street from St. Henry?s Catholic Church, where she was a faithful parishioner for many years. She would routinely walk to church every day to attend mass.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Frank Dunlap, Jr. and a sister Jean Mrs. Edmund Nichols of Mauriceville.
She is survived by a sister Margie Mrs. George Stevens of Orange.
She is survived by three children and their spouses; daughter, Lois Jeanne DunlapMrs. Carl Dorman of Houston, son Freddie Dunlap and his wife JoAnn of Bridge City/Crystal Beach and a son, Dennis Eugene Dunlap and his wife Deanna of Groves.
She is survived by nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Shawn Gauthier, Brandon Scott Gauthier, Ira Carl Dorman III, Eric Keith Dorman, Shawn Frederick Dunlap and Ricky Stevens.
Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Dorman and Michael Eric Gauthier.
