Hortense S. Lucas, 102, of Orange, passed away Monday, November 22, 2010, in Orange.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. one hour prior to the service on Saturday, November 27, 2010, at Claybar Funeral Home Chapel in Orange. Officiating will be Dr. Andy Pate of First Christian Church in Orange. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Orange.
Hortense "Dady" was born in Orange on September 15, 1908. She was the daughter of Mathias and Justine Huber Strucel. Hortense worked for AT&T from 1929, beginning as an operator and eventually retired as a supervisor in 1964. She is especially remembered for her gentle nature and patience with her great-nieces and nephews. They will remember her "tea parties" when they visited with her.
She and her late husband enjoyed many years of traveling and fishing. Hortense will be remembered for her lively interest in everything. Her life spanned the era of horse and buggy to the landing on the moon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert "Bob" Lucas; sisters, Lillian Strucel and Bessie Lester; brothers, Adolph and Herbert Strucel; nephew, David Lester, Jr.; and cousin, Cornelia Huggins Stevens.
Hortense is survived by her nieces, Jean Thompson of Austin, Justine Wuest of Idaho, Mary Ann Leedy of Hemphill, and Betty Patten of Orange; nephew, Tom Lester and wife, Sherry of Orange; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
Serving as Pallbearers will be Keith Lester, Kenneth Lester, Karl Leedy, Herb Leedy, Will Cowart and Chris LaChance.
