Jesse Rourke Miller, a long time resident of Orange, TX, passed away peacefully December 23, 2008. Born October 2, 1914 in Teddy, LA and raised in Norwood, LA where he was known as "Fritz", he resided in Orange from 1946 until 2004 at which time he and his wife relocated to the Atlanta area to be near his children.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Miller, of 67 years, sisters Louise Scarle and Nan Smith; two children, Pat Schriver and Brady Miller; four grandchildren Elizabeth Schriver, Jenny Baker, Aaron Miller, Rebecca Miller and one great grandchild Ethan Baker. He was predeceased by his father, Jesse Shelmire Miller; mother, Johnnie Laura Rourke Miller; and sister, Elizabeth Andrews.
Jesse graduated from LSU with BS and Masters Degrees in Electrical Engineering in 1939, but not before meeting the cute girl wearing a yellow dress at a LSU dance. He married Vida "Pat" Claire Richard of Jennings, LA in 1941.
Jesse began a long and fruitful career with E.I. du Pont de Nemours in Baton Rouge in 1939. He relocated twice, first to Wilmington, DE in 1941 and then to Orange, TX in 1946 to be involved with the start-up of the Sabine River Works plant. Always considering it a privilege to have been a part of the DuPont Company, he retired in1977 as the superintendent of the ENCO division.
Friends will remember him for being an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, a YMCA Board member, sharing his knowledge of finances and investing, an exercise enthusiast, developing property around the Orange area, his dry humor, rising early in the morning, bringing neighbors' newspapers from the street to their doorsteps, and his dedication to DuPont and safety on / off the job. His family will remember him for his love, hard work, honesty and integrity, and joy in grilling a steak to perfection.
He felt that he owed his success to many people and things. Those that he spoke of most often were God's grace, being born poor and working hard from age seven when he began selling roasted peanuts, and his wonderful wife, Pat.
May God love him as a faithful servant and welcome him with open arms.
A memorial service will be held in Orange at a future date. Please make any donations in his name to the First Presbyterian Church, Orange, TX Restoration Project.
