I was very sad to learn of the death of my friend Jimmy LaComb. Many years have passed since I last saw or spoke to him but I never doubted our friendship which began long ago as good friends and classmates in Bridge City and teammates as Bridge City Cardinal football players. Jimmy and I would eventually share in one major life event that neither of us could have forgotten. In the fall of 1974 we launched into life together leaving behind the security and familiarity of our paternal homes in Bridge City to travel away to play football at the University of Texas at Arlington- and, for two 18-year-olds that had never been away from home- to destinies that were unknown. On the morning we departed, and still wiping tears from my eyes, I arrived to pick up Jimmy, whose parting from his folks had been similar to my own. We both understood. Together we began the long trip to Arlington in a somber silence until the miles gave way to conversation, lunches that had been bagged by our moms, and as much levity we as we could muster despite our apprehensions. We eventually arrived at our destination which, looking back now, was just the first steps in the life that lay before us then. All would turn out well for us at UTA, and future trips would be more jovial, although neither of us stayed in Arlington long before moving on to other callings. Looking back, I am happy it was Jimmy who made that first trip away from home with me— and I with him. I could not have had a better friend or companion at the time. He had a keen sense of humor and always found an occasion to laugh, or at least find a silver lining in bad circumstances. Jimmy was genuinely kind and a friend in the true meaning of the word. Jimmy would go on to help many people in their struggles and devote his life to helping others. In his eventual vocation as phycologist he would ease the suffering of others and do his best to help those in confusion and despair. I don’t know of a higher calling a man can have. I am proud to have known him. In the years that followed, our paths would cross from time to time and the friendship we had as youngsters always remained. As it does today, despite his passing. I am honored to know Jimmy’s son Jared, who I first saw as an infant in a crib back in our hometown a few years after our UTA adventure. His son has grown into a fine young man and blessed Jimmy with a beautiful daughter-in-law Chrissy and granddaughter Cambree. Please know my prayers are with you all and I join you in your grief and also happy remembering. Mark Dunn
