John Herschel Kerr, 81, of Beaumont, Texas, passed away on September 22, 2008, surrounded by his wife and family. He was born in Beaumont, Texas February 1, 1927 to Steve C. and Jessie Kerr.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 26, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in the Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in the Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday in the funeral home Family Center.
John served in World War II in the United States Army Air Corp. Following his return to Beaumont, he worked at Magnolia Refinery and Mobil Chemical Company and retired after forty years. He was an avid baseball fan and worked with all aspects of amateur baseball in the Beaumont area. John was involved in the establishment of the Texas Blueberry Growers Association and was appointed the first director of the Southeast Texas Area Association of the state organization. He was an avid gardener and was well known for his home made jams and jellies.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Denise, great-granddaughter Reyna, brother, Neil and sister, Aline. He is survived by his wife, Dolores Park Kerr. They had celebrated 60 years of marriage in November, 2007. Also left to cherish his memory are his son, John S. Kerr and wife, Jeri; grandchildren, Nicole Lynn Kerr and Stephanie Leigh Moore; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Jimenez, Sierra Collazo, Sophia Collazo, and Aden Marshall; brother, Steve C. Kerr and wife, Bobbie and sisters, Margaret Gainer and husband, Henry and Evelyn Odom; sisters-in-law, Lucy, Margaret, and Elaine as well as ten nieces and seven nephews.
The family is grateful to Dr. Stovall and the VA Clinic for their care for many years; Dr. Wayne Margolis and his staff; his nurse, Charlotte from Physician Link, and the doctors and nurses at Memorial Hermann Baptist Hospital.
