Julian W. Garrett

Julian W. Garrett, father of Judith Garrett Segura and Julian Thomas Garrett, died peacefully on January 7, 2012, three days after his 94th birthday. Born in Asher, Oklahoma on January 4, 1918, Julian moved with his parents and siblings in 1931 to the Texas Rio Grande Valley. He worked on his father's farm near Raymondville and attended school in San Perlita and Raymondville.
He played football at Raymondville High School, and from there he went on to play tackle for The University of Texas in Austin under legendary coach Dana X. Bible. In 1940 he was one of "The Immortal Thirteen" at UT, and he appeared with his teammates on the cover of Life Magazine on November 17, 1941. That issue contained a long, illustrated story about his team.
He had received offers to play professional football, but his life took a different turn on December 7, 1941, the day after the last game of his senior year, with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. His passion for The University of Texas football never waned and will continue into eternity if such a thing is possible.
His war service was civilian, as he was recruited to shift from summer temporary work at Consolidated Steel Corporation, Shipbuilding Division in Orange, Texas, to full-time supervisory work at one of the nation's busiest wartime shipbuilding operations. In Orange, he met the young woman who would become his sweetheart for life, Margaret "Peggy" Toal. They were married in 1942, and their children were born in 1944 and 1947. Most of his work life after the War was spent in the petrochemical industry in Orange and Beaumont, Texas.
He was the grandson of Alexis Guerrettaz, who emigrated from France as a child, and whose widow Americanized the spelling of the name for their nine children. His father was Joseph S. Garrett and his mother was Arminta Maggard Garrett. Julian survived his five brothers and three sisters, as well as his beloved Peggy and her two brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his two children and their spouses and families, as well as numerous nieces and nephews spread throughout Texas and beyond.
A memorial endowment fund has been established in his name at The University of Texas in Austin. The Julian W. Garrett Research Travel Fund at the Briscoe Center for American History will be used to provide grants to students from other campuses wishing to travel to Austin to pursue research at the Briscoe Center. Contributions in his memory may be made to the fund by contacting The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at 1 University Station D1100, Austin, TX 78712-0335, or by calling the Briscoe Center at 512-495-4515.
In lieu of flowers, his family suggests contributions either to the Briscoe Center or to the Orange County Salvation Army at P. O. Box 456, Orange, TX 77631-0456.
A family visitation will be held at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange, Texas on Tuesday, January 10, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. He will be buried the following day at 10 a.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, next to his beloved Peggy. Honorary Pall Bearers: All of his beloved nephews and nieces, lifelong friend Olney Beltz, and his first cousin Frank I. Garrett.
