Lt. Col. Amy Louise McConnell

Amy Louise McConnell passed away on Friday, January 8, 2010, at Memorial Hermann Baptist-Beaumont in Beaumont, TX.
Aunt Amy, as she was known to her many nieces and nephews, was born in Winnsboro, TX , April 4, 1923. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Laura McConnell of Beaumont, of Winnsboro, brothers, Garner, Otis and Huie McConnell; half brothers, Earnest and Luther D. Laminack; and sisters Edna Chilton and Ruth Moorehead. She is survived by her brother Rex McConnell and his wife, Nita of Trinity, TX and her good friend and sister-in-law, Georgia Fay McConnell of Beaumont.
After 25 years of nursing service in the Army Nurse Corps, she retired with the rank of Lt. Col. Amy received her nursing training at Hotel Dieu Hospital in Beaumont. She served in both Korea and Vietnam and missed serving in WW II by one month. She was one of the original M.A.S.H. nurses in Korea.
In June, 1969, while serving in Vietnam, Amy earned the Purple Heart for wounds she received, which resulted in a 70% hearing loss. She also received the Bronze Star for valor under enemy fire, A Meritorious Service Medal, an Army Commendation Medal, the Japan Occupational Ribbon, the Korean Service Ribbon with three campaign stars and a Vietnamese Service Ribbon with four campaign stars.
She was a life Member of DAV, AMVETS, American Legion, VFW and the Purple Heart Association. She was a charter member of The Vietnam Memorial, the Retired Army Nurse Association, the Military Medical Museum, the Women and Military Service for America Memorial and the George Glasspool VFW Post 1514 in Village Mill, TX
Most recently, her nephew, Cecil, built the Lt. Col. Amy L. McConnell Military Museum which was designed, funded and donated to VFW 1514 in Village Mills by McConnell. Since the year 2000, Post 1514 has awarded two $500 scholarships in the name of Amy McConnell to students pursuing a career in the field of nursing.
Amy credits the good nuns at Hotel Dieu for teaching her the skills as a nurse and thanks God for giving her courage to apply those skills under trying circumstances. And now, she has been better paid-perhaps at a reception for nurses at that Mansion in the sky.
Visitation for Lt. Col. Amy McConnell will be Monday, January 11th, from 6-8:00 p.m. at Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home located at 1155 N. 11th St. in Beaumont. Services will be Tuesday, January 12th at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Graveside services will be Wednesday, January 13th in Winnsboro, TX.
