Margaret Chelette Carter, 101, of Orange, Texas, passed away on April 5, 2016, in Silsbee, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, April 8, 2016, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. Officiating will be Reverend Roger Hoogterp, of Central Baptist Church in Evadale, Texas. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Orange.

Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Born in Hutchington, Louisiana, on February 13, 1915, she was the daughter of Arthur Baxton Chelette and Ida Chelette. Margaret moved to Orange on June 19, 1918 and graduated from Orange High School in 1933. She was a member of McDonald Memorial Baptist Church in Orange since 1953. She worked at City Hall as secretary to Director of Parks and Recreation and Director of Port of Orange for seven and half years. In 1954 she was employed by the Orange Independent School District as registrar at the Stark Senior High School for 22 years. After retiring from the school system she became a member of the local and state Texas Retired Teachers Association. She then went on to work part time as office manager of the Orange County Family Counseling Service, Inc. from 1977 to 1999. During her working years Margaret was a member of the Orange Business and Professional Women’s Club from 1946 to 1956. In 1954 she was elected Business Woman of the year. She was also a member of National Secretary Club of Orange.


She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J.W. Carter; sisters, Gladys Chelette and Joyce Van Auken; brother, Marvin O. and wife Cecile Chelette; and her granddaughter-in-law, Tawny Belle Carter.

She is survived by her son, Arthur David Carter, Sr. and wife Barbara, of Houston; grandchildren, Arthur David Carter, Jr.; great-grandson, Jacob Carter; along with many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces; great-grandnephews; and great-great and great-great-great-nieces and nephews.


Serving as pallbearers will be Ryan Johnson, Tyler Simmons, Bryce Tousha, Hunter Abate, David Carter, and Jacob Carter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to McDonald Memorial Baptist Church at 2015 Sims St. Orange, TX 77630.
