Rosetta Morgan

Rosetta Morgan, 70, of Orange, Texas, passed away on November 18, 2024, at Houston Methodist.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 22, 2024, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. Officiating will be Wyatt Wier. Burial will follow at Orange Forest Lawn Cemetery in West Orange.

Visitation will begin prior to the service at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 22, 2024, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange.

Born in Orange, Texas on March 25, 1954, she was the daughter of Frank Richardson Jr. and Janice Marie (Masters) Richardson. She was a dedicated and loving wife to her husband, Alton. Rosetta had a deep passion for education having served as a teacher, assistant principal, and head principal over the course of nearly 40 years. Her commitment to students and community was evident throughout her career. In recognition of her outstanding work, Rosetta received numerous accolades as Principal of Langham Elementary in Nederland ISD, was a Who's Who Among American Educators, and being a multiple recipient of Teacher of the Year. Moreover, after graduating high school from West Orange where she served as drum major, she was proud to take her talents to McNeese State University where she became the lead twirler on a scholarship. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Rosetta was a beloved figure to many. She brought warmth and joy into the lives of those around her. Much like her wonderful cooking, a skill she inherited from her mother, Rosetta was truly a light in the world. Her favorite hobby was spending time with her son and best friend, Brandon. She also enjoyed going on travels and embracing her role as a loving mother. Her life was filled with laughter and shared experiences that enriched her family and friends. Rosetta will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Alton Morgan of 32 years; parents, Janice and Frank Richardson, Jr.; brother, William Greer; and sister, Joyce Cockerham.

She is survived by her son, Brandon Morgan and wife Jana; brother, Frank Richardson III (Chuck) and wife Darinda; cousin, Dennis Wallace as well as other loving family and friends.

Serving as pallbearers will be Dennis Wallace, Gary Gunter, Chris Williams, David Duplechin, Bill Greer, Steven Ray Collins, and Brent Williams.

Most people knew my mother, Rosetta Morgan, through the eyes of their professional scope. She was indeed a great leader, driven, caring, and loving towards both the children that she served and the teachers and assistant administrative personnel that worked with her. She took over an elementary school that had lost its way and over the course of being head principal for 14 years until she retired created an empire that not only placed Langham Elementary on the map of Texas but a blueprint for success for an entire country to mimic. She was referred to multiple times as the Nick Saban of Principals because not only was she known as the best, but if you were selected to work for her you would probably end up holding a leadership position when your time for promotion came elsewhere. Truly she coined the phrase Good, Better, Best. She was proud of her career and her service. She valued her teachers and coworkers and wanted me to know if anything ever happened to her to let those that served with her know that she believed that during her time as leader, she brought in the best teachers on the planet that walked through the doors of Langham everyday. You honor her memory by simply being great like you are and carrying on the mission. If this is all that could be said for a person then this would be enough. However, there was another side that was even to a deeper and more special degree that I got to witness and did not have to share with the world, that being my mother’s heart. My mother’s first words to me were “Hello, Best Friend.” Her last words to me were “I love you.” In between were memories that will stand beside me forever. My mother took on my fears, my worries, and my doubts, and not simply when I was a child. She was the person I came too well into my adult years for guidance, someone I could talk too, the same person that would sing to me when I couldn’t sleep some nights even up to a couple of weeks ago. The same person that held me years after 2005 when I would cry from the passing of my father, Alton. The nights that I sat up reviewing game film before I led my people on the field when I was a high school coach or the nights and mornings I came in with scratches, lacerations and torn patrol uniforms from standing as a protector keeping the evil away from the good as a police officer. She was there to comfort me and give me peace. The only one that I trusted to love me unconditionally and never leave my side. She was and will always be my best friend. That’s the thing about best friends, the street goes two ways. I was her hero and she was mine. I stood and fought her battles, I held her at night when she was upset, I gave advice to her, I stood beside her with the most respect and admiration for her. You see, we carried each other’s crosses. When one felt like the other could not go on, we carried it for each other until the other could stand again. Hand in hand, we never let go of each other….. I will never let go. I have now had the horrible experience of living through the passing of both my mother and my father. For an only child like myself, my parents created a triangle of love and loyalty. It was always the three of us, mom, dad, and myself. Although they were different in many ways, they were alike in their approach to life. They attacked it with everything they had. They never gave up in a war, and they protected those in the inner circle, and they loved me more than anything. They lived the term, “no retreat , no surrender.” It is because of their love and fearlessness that I know exactly what I am…. I’m a gunfighter……raised by a family of gunfighters. My mother would often read me a book when I was a child about a mother and a son. When the little boy was scared, his mother would put her arms around him and tell him “ I love you forever, I love you always” When the little boy grew up and became a man when the world got too much for him, she would put her arms around him and tell him “ I love you forever, I love you always” When she became older and her time was near, that same little boy that had grown up put his arms around his mother and told her “ I love you forever, I love you always.” You see, I lived this book because of how special my mother was and will always be. My mother also told me that when my time came, and I close my eyes for the last time, that when I open them, she would be the first person I see, and she wouldn’t be late. That is the only thing that keeps me going now. The promise that I will see her again. My mother never lied to me nor did she ever let me down in all of my 43 years on this earth. Well Momma, I’m on my way to you, pretty girl. I love you forever, I love you always.

It was our honor to share with you and Jana the special day of honoring your dear mother (& friend), in her "celebration of life" and laying her rest with her beloved husband Alton. You handled it with such strength, dedication and grace. But this does not surprise us since those words, "strength", "dedication", and "grace" describe your mother so well. Her legacy lives on thru you.

Brandon and Jana, I'm so very sorry for your loss. You have both been in my thoughts and prayers. Rosetta was a very special lady who lived her life out loud and passionately. She was a blessing to so many, and she and my Mom had a very special bond in their friendship, and that was a beautiful gift. She will be truly missed, but I know she will live on in your hearts. Sending prayers and love your way.

Sometimes there are no words for a loss so great. I will miss my friend and former colleague. Rosetta and I shared a love of dogs and a passion for the Dallas Cowboys. She was always there to lend support when things were tough at work. Nederland ISD and Langham Elementary were so fortunate to have had her as a principal. The light of this candle and my memory of Rosetta will live on. A beautiful life well lived. She will not be forgotten.

My Mammie Lou I had the distinct privilege of calling Rosetta my mother-in-law. She’s the absolutely best anyone could ever ask for. I was the lucky one - she welcomed me into her world with open arms and never looked back. Fiercely loyal yet compassionate, hard working, committed, a true leader, a “momma hen” with a gentle and generous heart as well as an excellent role model for all. I know, it sounds just like my husband Brandon - that’s where he gets it. She believed wholeheartedly in her educational profession. She loved her Langham family. The greatest gift you can give someone is a chance. She did that for her students, her staff, her friends, and for me. I had the opportunity of a lifetime of working with her at Langham; although biased, no principal can ever hold a candle to her. Her never give up attitude, let’s problem solve and find another way has driven me too. I’m so proud of my mother-in-law and her accomplishments. Her pleasurement for “girly things” was evident and I enjoyed her showing me the ropes and sharing in these fun times. Pedicures, hair salon visits, spa time, and countless trips to MAC, Sephora, and Merle Norman will never be the same. Her absence is already felt. I know I’ll miss “talking shop” with her about my school day, what’s new at school and how the kids are doing as she always asked. All the memories, traditions, travels, and fun times will never be forgotten. She is everywhere. She was taken all too soon. She gave me the best gift of all, her precious baby boy, and I’ll forever be grateful. He is my heart, and I’ll love him always and forever - a rock and a hero. Likewise, Brandon was her heart and soul, pride and joy. He was her greatest achievement; Brandon always superseded her expectations and dreams of a son. She deserved the best, and she gave the best. This was her crowning moment. I say with tears in my eyes and a smile on my face, my momma got a new friend in heaven with Mammie Lou; I know they’re laughing and chatting about us kids right now. I love you, Mammie Lou, and I’ll see you later.

I will address each of you in the order that I am viewing these. Suze (Belt) Hardy : There is not a memory of my high school that doesn’t have you in it. I have had the honor of knowing Mrs. Rosetta, Mr. Alton, and Brandon since 1995. Brandon has been one of my closest friends from the time that we first met. We would spend a lot of time at the Morgan house and Mrs. Rosetta was always hospitable, caring, and friendly. She made all of the Oak Manor crew of boys feel welcome at their home. She and Mr. Alton were sincerely interested in how our lives were going and would frequent our sporting events to cheer us to victory. I know that she and Brandon were best friends and she was very proud of Brandon. Her influence on his life certainly played a role in the man that he has become today. Brandon and Jana, my heart aches for what you are having to endure. I love you both

For career , I leave my name out of this but it is important for me to say that although I didn’t know Brandon’s mom, I do know him. Brandon is the bravest and most honorable police officer that I have ever served with. When other officers would wait , he didn’t. He risked it all to keep people safe. His mind is very sharp and with his athleticism and strength I knew that patrol and narcotics division would never hold him as he progressed to the state police and latest the federal level. The same man that kept a picture of his mother , daddy, and wife in his patrol car. He kissed each one everytime before shift. Rosetta had to be incredible, because of how he is. There is no way without a special lady like that that anyone could do the positive things he has done. My heart goes out to you, my brother.

I have had the privilege to know Mrs. Rosetta Morgan since Brandon and I became really good friends our freshman year of high school back in 1996. I have memories of her helping Brandon and I do our English homework. No doubt helping me more than Brandon. Mrs. Morgan and her husband never missed any of our games. They were always there to cheer Brandon on. Make no mistake she was Brandon's biggest cheerleader. She always had a twinkle in her eye, and when she smiled her whole face smiled. She had a very distinctive soft voice. She was always kind and gentle. She was proud of Jana too. She told me many times she couldn't have picked a better person for Brandon than Jana. She loved you both more than life itself. She was always family first and she treated me like family. It was my privilege to have known her for as long as I have. Brandon and Jana, my heart hurts for you. I love you guys.

We are truly sorry for your loss. I met Rosetta at McNeese, almost walked into her coming out of the MSU Band Hall one day. We were in the same dormitory also. That was the Fall of 1972 & we became friends. I enjoyed our friendship. We had lots of fun through the years. I went to her wedding. She served at Gary’s table at ours. My son ,Christopher & I played the violin & organ at Brandon & Jana’s wedding. There’s a lot of history between us. We will all truly miss Rosetta. Our thoughts & prayers are with you.
