Samuel Hattman

June 16, 1925 — April 30, 2007

Samuel Charles Hattman, 81, of Orange, died Monday, April 30, 2007, at Christus St. Mary Hospital in Port Arthur.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 3, 2007, at Claybar Funeral Home Chapel in Orange. Bruce Lewis, Church of Christ in Weatherford, Oklahoma will be officiating.
Visitation will be 6:00-9:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Graveside services and burial will be at 6:00 p.m. Thursday at San Augustine City Cemetery in San Augustine, TX.
Mr. Hattman was born June 16, 1925 in Pittsburgh, PA to Myrtle and John Hattman.
At age 17 he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was stationed in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. Immediately after serving in the Navy he went to work for DuPont. During his 34 years of employment he worked in several departments. He was sent to Wilmington to train as the first asbestos sampler at Sabine River Works. Sam was respected by all and due to his wide range of expertise was called upon to help in many ways.
Sam was a member of the Orange Lion?s Club receiving several awards such as the Distinguished Service Award as Song Leader. He also received The Melvin Jones Award for outstanding service to the Lion?s Club and was given the Lion of the Year Award in 1980.
Sam was a founding member and was very active in the Orange Community Players. In 1999, he was given the Award for Dedication and Loyal Service to the OCP. He was also an active member in the Ninth and Elm Church of Christ.
Some of Sam?s hobbies included collecting antique clocks and coins. He also loved his Model A car and was a member of the Antique Model A Car Club.
He enjoyed helping out behind the scenes with various, community projects, such as doing electrical work during the Lions Club Carnival, behind the curtain in little theater.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Fay Speer.
He is survived by his wife Johnnie Faye ?Jeff? Hattman of Orange, daughter, Melissa Hattman of St. Louis, MO, niece, Linda Groene of Los Angeles, CA, nephew Richard Speer of Houston, cousins, Lenore Hawsey of Houston and John Paul Gasow of Orange.
Serving as pallbearers will be Larry David, Jack Moore, Travis Clark Howard Williams, Bill Duncan and Jim Sibert.
Honorary pallbearers will be John Hopay and Richard Doggett.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ninth and Elm Church of Christ/David Hallett Mission Fund and Orange Community Players Building Fund.
