Samuel E. Wingate

Samuel E. "Sam" Wingate, 86, a resident of West Orange for the past 70 years, died Monday, June 15, 2009, at Baptist Orange Hospital.

His family invites his friends to gather with them to honor and celebrate his life at 2:00 pm Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Claybar Funeral Home Chapel in Orange. Officiating will be Reverend Brad Morgan of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Bridge City. Burial will follow at Orange Forest Lawn Cemetery in West Orange.

Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 pm Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Sam was born on July 12, 1922, in Merryville, Louisiana. He was the son of Samuel L. and Gracie Parker Wingate. Sam was a retired PBX and Teletype repairman where he had worked for Southwestern Bell for 38 years. He was a 52 year member of the Masonic Lodge 126 AF&AM. He was a Royal Arch Mason and a Select Master Mason. He had served on the West Orange Water Board for 38 years and the West Orange City Council for 4 years. He was also a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in West Orange.

Throughout Sam's life, he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. But most of all, he was a loving husband of 65 years, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his sister and three brothers. Survivors include his spouse, Betty Wingate of West Orange; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Victor Blum of Orange; daughter, Sammye Sherrill of Orange; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Kay Wingate of Bridge City; 5 grandchildren, Dana Daigle, Courtney Hubbard, Brittney Sherrill, Nicole Albanese and Katherine Wingate; 4 great-grandchildren, Jagger, Macie, Cutler, Rylie. He is also survived by his brother, Otis Wingate of Tyler; and his sister, Patsy Witt of Pekin, Illinois.

Serving as Pallbearers will be CS Busby, Ike Matthews, Steven Daigle, William Hubbard, Jr. Mike Albanese and Randy Hunter.
