Shirley Butcher Burney
Shirley Butcher Burney, 88, of Orange, Texas, passed away on June 13, 2023, peacefully at home.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, June 16, 2023, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. Officiating will be Paster Gary McCormick of First Christian Church of Orange. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Orange.
Visitation will begin prior to the service at 1:30 p.m., Friday, June 16, 2023, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange.
Born in Fort Worth, Texas, on October 30, 1934, she was the daughter of Freeman L. Butcher and Doris T. (Hancock) Butcher. Shirley moved to Orange with her parents in the summer of 1949. She graduated from Lutcher Stark High School in 1952. Shirley met the love of her life Jack, in the 10th grade and they married in December of 1955. She later graduated from Lamar University in 1956 with a degree in Home Ec. And Education. Shirley was a school teacher and was active in the A.A.U.W., P.E.O., Service League and a guide at the Stark House for 27 years. Shirley enjoyed antique shopping and estate sales in her free time. She was a long-time member of First Christian Church of Orange and was the church historian for over 40 years. Shirley was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother and she loved her family very much. She will be deeply missed.
She is preceded in death by her parents, F.L. and Doris Butcher.
She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Jack Burney; daughters, Laura Floyd and husband, Carl, of Orange, and Belinda Culberson and husband, John, of Houston; grandchildren, Abby and Mike Terry of Dripping Springs, Allison and Cody Gummelt of Austin, Ashley Floyd of Beaumont, and Caroline V. Culberson of Austin; great-grandchildren, Hayden Dowden, Olivia Dowden, and Brock Terry of Dripping Springs; sister-in-law, Shirley Brown of Katy; as well as other loving family and friends.
Serving as pallbearers will be Carl Floyd, Mike Terry, Cody Gummelt, Greg Evans, Pleas Evans, Jr, and Stuart Greer.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Shirley’s name to the memorial fund at First Christian Church of Orange, 611 9th St, Orange, TX 77630.
