Steve Worster

1949 ∼ 2022

Steve Worster, 73, of Bridge City, passed away on August 13, 2022, at his home surrounded by loved ones.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 20, 2022, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. Officiating will be Darrell Segura.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 20, 2022, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange.

Steve was born in Rawlins, Wyoming, on July 8, 1949, he was the son of R.B. “Foots” and Louise Worster. Steve had a way about him that was unlike anyone else. He attended and graduated from Bridge City High School where he excelled in sports. Steve continued to amaze everyone with his athletic abilities in his college career at the University of Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas and went on to build a successful career in industrial sales. His talents in football were only a small portion of his successes, Steve felt his greatest accomplishments in life were his two children. There wasn’t anything that could come between Steve and his family, he truly loved them and the time they spent together. Every day he’d make time to go sit with his parents and drink a cup of coffee, and both Scott and Erin can agree that he was the best daddy in every way. Steve was a straight shooter as much as he was a hard worker, he was never one to wait around or find an excuse that just wasn’t him. He was a direct target for any animal or baby in his vicinity, and of course he ate it up. Steve’s favorite hobby was having good time and he was known to throw on some music and dance. He often enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, his favorite vacation spot, but it could never beat his home on the bayou. Steve was also an incredible cook and photographer amongst his many talents and hobbies. Anyone you ask will tell you the same, he’s easy to love and just all around a great man. Steve loved his family with his whole heart and will forever be loved and cherished by his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, R.B. and Louise Worster; and brother, Gary Worster.

He is survived by his children, Scott Worster and wife, Jacque, Erin Worster-Stephens and husband, Keith both of Orange; four grandchildren, Evan and Morgan Worster, Noah and Lukas Stephens; extended family, Knox McCorquodale, Clark Farnsworth and wife, Myra and family, Rodney Skrnich and wife, Erin and family; as well as numerous friends, family and teammates.

Cremation will be held under the direction of Claybar Funeral Home in Orange.

I know it is so hard to loose your Dad. He meant so much to soo many. He provided so many good memories for those who went to school with him. I pray you get comfort in knowing that Steve was such a proud and humble man, that gave the world so much to remember. May the angels wrap their wings around you to guide you through.

I saw him play against McKinney in state game in 1966. I have seen many championships games since. I am from Celina Texas so I have grown up playing ball and going to games. I am now 70 years old, seen many high school athletes, but Steve was the best I have ever seen in the last 55 years. I wish I had known him personally, my brother met him at a cotton bowl reunion a few years ago, he mentioned how nice a man he was. Sorry for everyone’s loss. Mike Scott Henrietta Texas

Steve and I grew up in the same neighborhood (Lowe Addition). We lived in Orange but were in the Bridge City school district. What a lucky break for Bridge City having Steve in their district! He was a little older than most of the kids in our neighborhood, but he was always very friendly with us youngsters. He even occasionally joined in friendly sandlot games of football and baseball. Steve could have crushed us in those games but he didn't. I guess he was saving all his bone crushing abilities for Friday nights. Looking back on those times Steve was the perfect example of a gentle giant. Also most people don't realize how good a baseball player he was. In our sandlot baseball games he would not only hit the ball out of the sandlot but on top of houses a block away! My family followed Steve's high school football years and pulled for him at UT. He made us so proud. Those state play off games were very special and united all of Bridge City. I was very sad to hear of Steve's passing. I pray for the family as you go through this very difficult time. Steve will remain in very fond memories by a lot of people. Gary Bergeron

Steve, “The eyes of Texas are upon you all the live long day. The eyes of Texas are upon you, you cannot get away. Do not think you can escape them, from dawn ‘til early in the morn’. The eyes of Texas are upon you ‘til Gabriel blows his horn.” You are in our hearts and souls forever. With the love you gave us so deeply, we will always be lifted. Thank you.

While I didn't know your dad personally, I was at UT for those magical years and at the Cotton Bowl for that awesome win over Notre Dame! He was quite an athlete and sounds like the wonderful person that I thought he was. Treasure the memories. He will always be remembered. Condolences and God Bless. Woo Woo.

I WAS 8 YEARS YOUNGER THAN STEVE, HE WAS MY IDOL & I FOLLOWED HIM AS A LONGHORN WITHOUT REALLY KNOWING HIM, AS OUR LIVES MOVED I WAS A BUYER FOR ANR PIPELINE IN SABINE PASS, HE WAS IN SALES & HE CALLED ON ME & I WAS IN AWE, THE STEVE WORSTER. WE BECAME FRIENDS, BUT MORE THAN THAT, HE WAS SUCH A HUMBLE GUY & WE GOT ALONG GREAT. IT WAS LIKE HAVING ANOTHER OLDER BROTHER. MY FAVORITE TIMES WITH STEVE IS WHEN WE WOULD CELEBRATE HIS CHLDRENS BIRTHDAYS & GET TOGETHERS, HE WAS ONE OF THE BEST FATHERS YOU WOULD EVER MEET. MY MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT WAS STEVE INVITING ME TO HIS INDUCTION INTO THE COTTON BOWL HALL OF FAME, HE INTRODUSED ME TO DARRYL ROYAL & OTHERS. IN CLOSING, STEVE WAS ONE OF THE MOST GRACIOUS PEOPLE YOU WOULD EVER MEET, R.I.P. BIG GUY, LOVE YA FRIEND

When I was 12 I had my very first idol and his name was Steve Worster. I was a UT football junkie and that 1960-70 Championship team was my world. When I was 18 I met and became friends with Strve when he got a job in my hometown of San Antonio working for Lone Star beer. Our friendship lasted until his death. What a wonderful person and friend he was. RIP Steve. My dad was right those many years ago when he told you that “my daughter thinks you hung the moon “….I’ll miss you:two_hearts::pray:

Erin, I am so sorry for your loss. Steve was a great friend. Always very honest and kind. He gave us his jersey to hang in The Hoffbrau along with Earl Campbell's. Steve and Earl both liked Coors Light--on the rocks! I still have his jersey and am going to give it to you very soon. I have known him since he dated Becky Braden back in the late 60's. I have always been honored to know him and you, and am thankful he let you work at The "brau with all of us! He's the only person I know who appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated---TWICE! Let me know what I can do for you, Erin. Thoughts and prayers to you and your family. SIncerely, Rocky Chase

Steve was a teammate, roommate, friend, brother that I was fortunate enough to share some of the greatest moments of my life with. When Coach Royal asked me to call Steve to talk about attending the University of Texas I was more than happy to do it. That call started a 55-year friendship that endured good and not so good times. Steve was humble and gracious in all aspects of his life. He gave his all whether he was playing football, cooking, partying, philosophizing or spending time with his family and friends. I loved Steve Worster, he was a legend on the football field but more importantly he was a loving son, brother, father and friend and will be missed by all.

I met Steve at a Houston area Academy store in August 2005. He autographed a football for my son. He seemed so down-to-earth and humble and nice. I enjoyed watching him play as a boy. He was how I first heard of Bridge City. Prayers for comfort for his family. David Goodman - Houston
