Sylvia Eloide Dunn, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on January 10, 2011 in Orange, TX, from a highly resistant staph infection that later resulted in renal failure.
Eloide was born on October 5, 1921, to Andrew A.J. Linscomb and Ada Willey, both descendants of families who were early settlers in Orange County. She spent most of her childhood in the small sawmill community of Texla and attended school in Mauriceville. It was there that she met her husband, Wilson "King" Dunn. At the ages of sixteen and nineteen, without telling anyone, they crossed the border into Louisiana and married. They would have celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary on April 16th of this year.
While raising her family, Eloide began working as a postal clerk in Mauriceville. This part time position eventually became a full time job as she worked in post offices located in Deweyville, Mauriceville and Beaumont. She retired from the United States Postal Service after 30 years of service.
Eloide was one of the charter members of the First United Methodist Church in Mauriceville. She loved to sew and the beautiful quilts that she made for family and friends will be her lasting legacy. Daddy said that in her younger years she would rather dance than eat. When she was able to walk, she enjoyed going to the Canton Trade Days and shopping at antique stores and craft shows. In her later years her favorite times were spent at the beach cabin in Crystal Beach—reading the National Enquirer, fishing and teaching her grandchildren and great grandchildren how to play cards.
She is preceded in death by a daughter, Olivia Dunn; granddaughter, Deanna Dunn; sister, Violet Stark; brother, Ocie Linscomb; and son-in-law, Garlan Perry.
In addition to her husband, Eloide is survived by six children: Nita Perry, Mauriceville; Andrew and Kathy Dunn, Orangefield; Derry and Jane Dunn, Mauriceville; Danny and Jan Dunn, Houston; Nancy and Keith Melancon, Round Rock; and Thomas and Dottie Dunn, Mauriceville. She was also known as "Grandma" to seventeen grandchildren and twenty five great grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 12, 6:00 P.M. at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 13, 2:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Mauriceville with the Reverend Douglas Caldwell presiding. Burial will follow at Wilkinson Cemetery in Orange County.
Serving as pallbearers will be her six oldest grandsons, Greg Perry, John Dunn, Joe Dan Dunn, Trent Marshall, Todd Dunn and Mark Dunn.
The family would like to thank Joan Williams and the loving staff at Answered Prayers who faithfully took care of Mom for the past two years. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Mauriceville, 11929 Highway 12, Orange, TX, 77632 or The Answered Prayer Private Care Facility, 602 Azalea Avenue, Orange, TX, 77630.
