Thomas “Sleepy” Smith of Orange, Texas, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at Liberty Dayton Regional Medical Center.
Sleepy was born on August 6, 1934, in Nacogdoches, Texas. Sleepy and the first love of his life, Alice Ann Moses Smith, collected antique clocks and traveled extensively throughout their lives. Sleepy was in the real estate business for 53 years and owned First Realty Associates for 40 years. He was a life long charter member of Orange Lions Club and Orange Rotary for 30 years. After a day at the office, he often enjoyed spending time with friends. He was an active member of McDonald Memorial Baptist Church. Sleepy married Leslie Moses Shivers on March 18, 2018. One of their favorite pastimes was watching “Cowboy” Brogan Thomas participate in roping and mutton busting at the local youth rodeo. In his recent years, he purchased land to begin raising cattle. Sleepy and Leslie took pleasure in sitting outside watching his cows and bull, Rascal graze. He loved his family and friends and will be deeply missed.
Sleepy was preceded in death by his parents, J.I. and Myrta Smith; his first wife, Alice Smith; his brother, Junior Barnes; and his sisters, Dorothy Vaughn and Pat Taggart.
He is survived by his loving wife, Leslie Smith; stepchildren, Wade Davis (Siyanee “Golfy”) of Bangkok, Thailand, Ronda Davis, Mark Davis, Jay Shivers (Kim), and Blake Shivers (Andrea) of Liberty; grandchildren, Matthew Davis (Mary), Cyndee Williams (Blake), Robert Worthy (Katie), Katie Burch (Dan), Raymond Davis (Shannon), and Julianne Shivers; brothers, J.W. Smith (Judy), Billy Joe Smith (Phyllis); brother-in-law, Bobby Moses (Jimmie); eight grandchildren; secretary and close friend, Pat Musemeche; many nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, August 29, 2022, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at McDonald Memorial Baptist Church in Orange, with Pastor Tommy Anthony officiating. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 p.m., at Cookes Memorial Cemetery in Liberty with Mike Woerner officiating.
Pallbearers will be Robert Worthy, Jay Shivers, Blake Shivers, Mark Davis, Steve Hardy, and Bobby Fillyaw. Honorary pallbearers will be Wade Davis, Brogan Thomas Worthy, Bob Shaw, and Gordon Underwood.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to his nurse, Manuel Ramirez, for the love, compassion, and care he showed Sleepy and Leslie during his illness.
Memorial contributions in honor of Thomas “Sleepy” Smith may be made to The American Cancer Society or McDonald Memorial Baptist Church.
