Verdie Lee Gray

December 6, 1924 — September 16, 2010

Verdie Lee Gray, affectionately known as Mommie and Birdie, passed away on September 16, 2010 following a lengthy illness of congestive heart failure.

A visitation and gathering of friends and family will be held Sunday, September 19, 2010 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 20, 2010 in the chapel of Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home at 12:00 noon with interment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Verdie Lee was born on December 6, 1924, in Beaumont, Texas to parents Ralph and Mary Carr. During her lifetime, Verdie Lee devoted herself to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and godmother. Verdie Lee was noted for her style and special gift of design skills in dressmaking and her contagious sense of humor.

Verdie maintained life long friendships from Beaumont and Crystal Beach, Texas. She made numerous new friends and church family after moving to McKinney, Texas, where she resided for the past 8 years.

Her greatest pleasure was enjoying time with her family and friends and enjoyed traveling to visit with them every chance she could accompany someone to Beaumont.

Verdie was preceded in death by the love of her life, Jimmy, her loving and devoted husband of fifty-five years, and her brother, Ralph Carr and sisters Elizabeth Jones Bertrand and Lottie Christopher.

Survivors include daughters Shirley Haney and husband Bill of Deweyville, Texas, Judi White and husband Don of McKinney, Texas, Pat Claiborne and husband Jerry of Houston, Texas and Pam Colburn and husband Joe of Anna, Texas. Grandchilden Kellye Ellis, Todd Haney, Jim White, Stacey Cusey, Scott Claiborne, Lori Louwerse, Gary Fernandez and 13 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Also surviving Verdie are her brother, Robert Carr and her sister Marie Netterville as well as numerous nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Alton Gray and Jerry Christopher,

Her daughters would like to thank Rolena Simmons for her love, care and devotion to our mother, Marianne Burrell for her love and prayers and recent visit, and Karen Atfield her much loved god daughter.

We will miss Mommy dearly.
