Walter Norris Miller of Nederland and Longview, Texas, passed away at the age of 79 due to complications from COPD and GI surgery.
Walter had been a member of the Northwest Church of Christ for decades, and valued his time with that congregation. He credited his life to helping others. He also enjoyed shooting competitions, as well as teaching hand gun classes and golf. He was President for the Citizens Police Assoc. He greatly valued his time in the Naval branch of the military, and looked for opportunities to pay respect to others in military by thanking anyone he ran across who was in uniform or who he could tell in some way was a veteran. He would help others in need even if it meant his doing without. If someone stopped him to thank him for his service, he loved that - not because he thought he deserved honor, as much as it meant that someone cared about their country enough to care about those who have sacrificed in their own lives for the good of everyone else in this country, and the preservation of our freedoms.
He is survived by daughters Janet (with Gary) Whitehorn of Longview, Texas, and Michele Binnicker of Beaumont, Texas. He is also survived by his sister, Clara Smith of Beaumont, Texas, along with 6 grandchildren (Garrett, Todd, Alina, Sabrina, Stacey, and Deanna), and 6 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Woodrow Wilson Miller, mother, Elvine Marie Landry Stansbury, brother, George Willis, and sister, Juanita VanSlyke.
Funeral services will be 2:00pm, Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home. Officiating will be Reverend Russ Bowman of North West Church of Christ. Burial will be held at Houston National Cemetery.
