William 'Bill' Vann

William "Bill" Vann, 84, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at Baptist Hospital in Beaumont.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 2010, at Claybar Funeral Home Chapel in Orange. Officiating will be Chaplain Kevin Trinkle of Baptist Orange Hospital. Burial will follow at Orange Forest Lawn Cemetery in West Orange.
Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Bill was born March 30, 1925, in Pensacola, Florida. He moved to Orange in 1947 and worked for DuPont Sabine River Works until he retired in 1983. Bill graduated from Lamar State College in 1960 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and a member of the United States Navy Memorial. He enjoyed attending the annual reunion of the USS Crater shipmates. He was a member of Drake Memorial Presbyterian Church for more than 55 years. Bill was also a Master Mason in Madison Lodge #126 AF&AM.
He was preceded in death by his father, Livvie Washington Vann; mother, Mary Martin Vann Croft; brothers, Livvie Washington Vann, Jr. and John Kader Vann; and sister, Frances Blake.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, Normandine Gunter Vann; daughters, Maraline Vann of Orange and Georgeann Johnston and her husband, Andy, of Austin; grandson, Lucas Vann Johnston, of Round Rock; his wife's brothers, Harold Gunter and Jim Gunter, whom he considered to be his brothers; his wife's sisters, Margi Balas and Georgie Jackson, who were like sisters to him; and many nieces and nephews.
Serving as Pallbearers will be Jim Blake, Livvie Vann, George Gowens, Tommy Gunter, Clifton D. Gunter, Tom Gunter, Tommy Conrad, Carrol Farmer, and James Van Pelt. Honorary Pallbearers will be Harold Gunter, Jim Gunter, Andy Johnston, Lucas Johnston, E.R. "Flip" Flippen, and Dr. John Halbert.
Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a man of his word. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his intellectual curiosity, and his willingness to help others.
