Woodrow Wilson Broussard

November 5, 1918 — September 1, 2012

Woodrow Wilson "Bruce" Broussard, 93, of Sour Lake, Texas, passed away after a long illness on September 1, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family.

Born in Vinton, Louisiana, on November 5, 1918, he served in the United States Navy during WWII, and later was employed by Gulf Oil Corp., now Chevron, for over 40 years.

Bruce served as a Post Commander of the American Legion for many years and was a First United Methodist Church Elder.

He mastered the leather-making art, including bullwhip-making and lassos, and was well known for his excellent craftsmanship.

Also, laymen and professionals alike sought out Bruce, a longtime cattleman and rancher, for his knowledge of animal husbandry. His reputation in the field was known far and wide and superior to most.

For his wisdom and guidance in everything from politics to business and ranching, Bruce was consulted by many. He was respected by all and will be greatly missed, not only for what he brought to the community, but for what he gave back, and the man that he was.

A resident of Sour Lake for over 60 years, Bruce was proud of the fact his Post Office box was the fourth one issued there. He was honored to serve as Sour Lake's Parade Marshal in 2007 and to be named "Old Timer of the Year" in 2008.

The last surviving member of his immediate family, Bruce was preceded in death by his parents and by his beloved wife of 53 years, Doris McAlister Broussard.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jane Selman Broussard; son, David Broussard and wife, Dorothy; daughter, Debra Broussard Harken and husband, Thomas L. Harken Jr.; stepson, Benton Selman; stepdaughter, Rachel Selman; grandsons, Thomas L. Harken III and Brandon Broussard; and granddaughters, Terran Alexis Harken and Ginger Broussard.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Monday, Sept. 3, 2012 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral home. There will be a celebration of Bruce's life Tuesday, at 2:00 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church.
Those who wish may make contributions in memory of Bruce to First United Methodist Church, Sour Lake, Texas.
