I am so sorry to hear about "Uncle Woodrow" and I am sooooo glad I was able to meet him last summer and put that sweet face with the name I heard in many stories throughout my life. Please know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers.

What can I say about my favorite uncle? He loved life, loved his extended family and he alwys had a smile on his face. And this is just starters! As young children, Uncle Woodrow liked being with us kids as much as being with the adults. Always a kid, himself, he played a tag, spit watermelon seeds and do "magic tricks." My greatest gift was to have seen him last summer when he was full of vim and vigor and laughter. My dearest family, I grieve with you now. Peace be with you.

One thing I always admired about Dad was that he never bought into other peoples prejudice or hatred. When his ship was torpedoed in the Pacific, he grabbed tissue paper from the head and tried to wipe oil out of the open wounds of several shipmates, and they just screamed even more, but it was never lost on him that many of those men dying for this country were black, and that many in this country would never appreciate the sacrafice they were making. I remember going into Weingarten's on a hot summer afternoon with him to get a drink of cold water, and a little old lady was drinking at the "white" fountain, so he went over to the "colored" fountain which was available and he started to drink when the LOL looked at him and said "You do know that's the colored fountain, don't you?" and Dad replied "It tastes the same to me". He set a wonderful example.
