Hubert H. Meadows

March 17, 1920 — February 13, 2010

Hubert H. Meadows, forever surrounded by the love of his family, went to be with our Lord on February 13, 2010. Hubert was born on March 17, 1920, in Tyler, Texas to Pleas Anderson and Annie Florede Clayton Meadows. Shortly after graduation from Tyler High School in 1940, he came to Orange, Texas to work in the shipyard. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific from 1942-1946. At the end of WWII, Hubert returned to Orange where he married Dorothy Lee Linscomb on January 29, 1946. He attended and graduated from Gulf Coast Business School and then worked for DuPont SRW and retired after 27 years. After "retiring" he went on to teach at Lamar University Orange. Hubert was involved in numerous community organizations deeply involved with the Orange Lion's Club, civic, and church activities. Special needs children benefited from his involvement both locally and at the state level. His basic involvement with these children resulted in the formation and building of OCARC and the Lufkin State School. As a member of First Presbyterian Church, he served as Deacon and participated in the choir for many years. This love of music enabled him to play piano "by ear" and several types of harmonicas as well. Hubert's skill with wood was phenomenal. As a master craftsman, he built cabinetry and furniture. His work can be seen in several local homes and businesses. The restoration of the family home at 611 7th Street was his pride. In fact, this project in 1964 began a trend in "Old Orange" of restoring many of the city's older, finer homes- the Heritage House being an outstanding example. His influence also resulted in several large new homes being built in the historic area as well.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, and sister. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Linscomb Meadows; daughter Sherinan Tomerlin Doug Tomerlin of Colorado Springs, Colorado; son Chris Clayton Meadows of Lufkin, Texas; Benjamin Brian Meadows Kelly Montagne-Meadows of Orange, Texas; and four grandchildren: David Tomerlin, St. Louis, Missouri, Beth Tomerlin, of Denver, Colorado, Brianna Meadows, of Orange, and Caleb Meadows, of Orange.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Heritage House Museum, Harbor hospice, First Presbyterian Church Organ Restoration Fund, or American Cancer Society.
Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church in Orange. Officiating will be Reverend Mike Umbenhaur. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, at Claybar Funeral Home Chapel in Orange.
