Joseph Grossman

A memorial service for Joseph Grossman, 91, of Orange will be held Sunday, April 25, 2010, at 2:00 p.m., at Claybar Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends and family beginning at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Lynn Ashcraft will officiate. Mr. Grossman passed away Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at Loving Care Nursing Facility.
Mr. Grossman was a native of The Bronx, New York, and a longtime resident of Orange. Joe was the youngest of three children born to Romanian immigrants who came to this country through Ellis Island. He served in the Army during World War II where he met and married his wife, Wilma Hoffpauir, in London, England. They were married 65 years. After returning from overseas he attended the Gemological Institute of America in Los Angeles, California, then moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana, and began his career in the jewelry business, which spanned more than 50 years. He worked for Gem Jewelry and Nacol's Jewelry before opening his own store, Grossman's Jewelers, in Sulphur, Louisiana, then in Orange. Joe loved to play golf and after his retirement, played with "The Herd" at Sunset Grove Country Club almost every day until he was unable to play any longer. He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, Max and Pauline Metch Grossman, his sister, Lillian Cohen and brother, Jack Grossman. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Bobbie and Don Burgess of Bridge City, daughter and son-in-law Pat and Larry Cooper of Silsbee, and son and daughter-in-law Ray and Pam Grossman of Friendswood; 10 grandchildren, Phyllis Fregia and husband Clint, Whitney Burgess, Donito Burgess and wife Whitney, Shelley Lewis and Michael Peevy, Christy Delacerda and husband John, Heather Latino and husband Lance, Mitchell Cooper and Jean Daigle, Clayton Grossman and wife Terri, Jennifer Black and Krystal Boyd and Sevren Grossman; 10 great grandchildren; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank his caretakers at home, Judy Mosley, Darilyn Chester, and Margaret Jackson for their care and patience. Special thanks to LaDonna Marks at Loving Care, she and her staff were wonderful; and to the nurses and staff of Southeast Texas Hospice for their care and compassion during his brief stay. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to Southeast Texas Hospice, Lamar State College-Orange Scholarship Fund, or the charity of your choice.
